Triathlon and Ironman are often used interchangeably in conversation. Especially amongst people new to the sport of triathlon. While both involve swimming, running, and biking, they are not the same thing. So, Triathlon vs Ironman: what exactly is the difference?
What is a Triathlon?
A triathlon is a multi stage competition that involves three continuous endurance disciplines. The traditional triathlon includes swimming, biking, and running, in that specific order. Triathlons were invented in the early 20th century, but has grown increasingly popular over the last 3 decades.
Triathlon Types
As the picture above indicates, there are many variations of triathlon. These include:
- Sprint Triathlon: This consists of a 750m swim, 20km bike ride, and a 5km run.
- Olympic Triathlon: Also known as Standard or International Distance, it features a 1.5km swim, 40km bike ride, and a 10km run.
- Half Ironman Triathlon: This features a 1.9km swim, 90km bike ride, and a 21.1km run.
- Ironman Triathlon: This includes a 3.86km swim, 180.25km bike ride, and a marathon 42.20km run.
The Ironman: A Triathlon of Its Own
Ironman is a specific type of triathlon. Although fitting, it is not a triathlete with extreme endurance capabilities. An Ironman Triathlon is a specific event organized by the World Triathlon Corporation.
Ironman is known for its iconic World Championship event held each year in Kona, Hawaii. Each triathlete qualifies for the race by winning or finishing near the top of their age group in another Ironman race.
Key Differences between a Triathlon and an Ironman
- One of the key differences between a triathlon and an Ironman is their length. An Ironman specifically refers to the longest distance in triathlon races.
- The term ‘Ironman’ can only be used for races organized by the World Triathlon Corporation due to its trademark status. This is why you may see other long-distance triathlons referred to as ‘full distance triathlons’ or ‘long course triathlons,’ but never as an Ironman unless it’s a WTC event.
- The Ironman has global prestige. Ironman races, particularly the World Championship in Hawaii, are renowned for their extreme challenge. They are considered a significant accomplishment in the world of endurance sports. Less than a 500,000 people have completed an Ironman.
