What to Know About Vo2 Max

The Gold Standard of Cardiovascular Fitness

Imagine you’re pushing yourself to your physical limit training for your first triathlon: heart pounding, lungs heaving. At this peak, there’s a metric that sports scientists would be itching to measure – your VO2 max. Let’s dive into why your VO2 Max matters for athletic performance.

Breaking Down VO2 Max

VO2 max represents the highest amount of oxygen your body can utilize during intense exercise, measured in milliliters of oxygen used in one minute per kilogram of body weight (ml/kg/min). It’s not just about lung capacity; it encompasses how effectively your heart pumps blood, how efficiently your muscles utilize the oxygen they receive, and a myriad of enzymatic processes within your cells.

Elite Athletes and Their VO2 Max Benchmarks

Jonas Vingegaard has won the Tour De France twice. He has a VO2 max in the range of 80-100 ml/kg/min. This capacity allows him to sustain high-intensity efforts. With his elite VO2 Max, he leaves his competition in the dust during climbs.

Elite athletes, due to rigorous training and often genetics, have remarkably high VO2 max values. For context:

  • Eliud Kipchoge is the best marathon runner in the world. He boasts a VO2 max of 85 ml/kg/min. This exceptional figure underpins his consistent and efficient pace over prolonged distances.

  • Usain Bolt, is known as one of the greatest Olympic sprinters of all time. His races are short and explosive, which means anaerobic processes play a big role in his performance. His Max probably isn’t as high as you think. Elite sprinters don’t need a high VO2 like endurance athletes. Estimated scores for elite sprinters are around 35-40 ml/kg/min.

Boosting Your VO2 Max

You can improve your VO2 with consistent and targeted training. Interval training, hill workouts, and prolonged endurance exercises can all contribute to a higher score. However, genetics play a big role. There’s a ceiling to how much you can increase it. It might be difficult to reach the level of an elite athlete, but I can personally assure you that there is room to grow. My VO2 has increased by 150% since I started training for my first Ironman.

While VO2 max is a key measure for endurance athletes, it’s just one piece of the performance puzzle. After all, athletic performance is a blend of physiology, technique, mindset, and the sheer will.
